< Stephen Friedman, the chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, abruptly resigned on Thursday, days after questions arose about his ties to Goldman Sachs.
Mr. Friedman was chairman of the New York Fed at the same time that he was a member of Goldman’s board. He also had a substantial stake in the firm as the Fed was devising a solution to keep Wall Street banks afloat. Denis M. Hughes, deputy chairman of the board, will take over as the interim chairman, the New York Fed said in a statement. (Read Mr. Friedman’s letter after the jump.)

The latest Post columnist to weigh in sympathetically on torturing Muslims labeled “unlawful enemy combatants” by the Bush administration is Richard Cohen in a classically dimwitted column entitled “What If Cheney’s Right?”
Cohen argues that former Vice President Dick Cheney had a point when he asserted that “enhanced interrogation techniques,” including the near-drowning experience of waterboarding, elicited important intelligence information from the suspects and thus saved American lives.
Cohen, who apparently considers himself quite clever and the issue of torture rather funny, starts the column off with the quip, “Blogger Alert: I have written a column in defense of Dick Cheney.” He later adds about the torture debate, "this is not merely some political catfight conducted by bloggers.”
While agreeing that torture is morally wrong, Cohen writes that “where I reserve a soupçon of doubt is over the question of whether ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ actually work. That they do not is a matter of absolute conviction among those on the political left, who seem to think that the CIA tortured suspected terrorists just for the hell of it.”

David Broder's column today provides a depressing example of the type of intellectual dishonesty and moral corruption of Beltway pundits that Glenn Greenwald (among many others) has been assailing in recent posts.
Broder is appalled at the thought the United States of America might wind up prosecuting senior US officials, possibly even the President, for committing serious felonies. Their argument is that without identifying and punishing the perpetrators, there can be no accountability -- and therefore no deterrent lesson for future administrations.
However, Broder just can't live with the thought that his pals in the government might have to face up to the crimes they have committed. His very next sentence negates the one clear thought he had:

No. Just no. Broder just can't accept the fact that he stumbled upon. Prosecutions are simply the only way administrations will learn that they cannot break the law with impunity. What do we have when the government is free to break the law without consequence? Dictionary.com provides a definition: "arbitrary or unrestrained exercise of power". The word defined here is "tyranny". Broder is so afraid of the appearance of "vengence" that he chooses to embrace tyranny.

David Broder's column today provides a depressing example of the type of intellectual dishonesty and moral corruption of Beltway pundits that Glenn Greenwald (among many others) has been assailing in recent posts.
Broder is appalled at the thought the United States of America might wind up prosecuting senior US officials, possibly even the President, for committing serious felonies. He acknowledges that "without identifying and punishing the perpetrators, there can be no accountability -- and therefore no deterrent lesson for future administrations." But rather than struggle with the implications of failing to hold senior officials accountable for committing serious crimes, Broder performs a COWARDLY BAIT & SWITCH:

n his April 26 column, David Broder descends to a new low in his disgustingly evil campaign to prevent accountability for torture as a United States government policy. Sadly, he recognizes the key reason for investigations leading to prosecutions:

However, Broder just can't live with the thought that his pals in the government might have to face up to the crimes they have committed. His very next sentence negates the one clear thought he had:

No. Just no. Broder just can't accept the fact that he stumbled upon. Prosecutions are simply the only way administrations will learn that they cannot break the law with impunity. What do we have when the government is free to break the law without consequence? Dictionary.com provides a definition: "arbitrary or unrestrained exercise of power". The word defined here is "tyranny". Broder is so afraid of the appearance of "vengence" that he chooses to embrace tyranny.

Shane Murphy, second-in-command aboard the ship seized by Somali pirates this month, is happy to be home. But he's not happy to be sharing turf with land-lubber Rush Limbaugh, who politicized the pirate affair by referring to the pirates as "black teenagers."
"It feels great to be home," said Murphy in an interview with WCBV in Boston. "It feels like everyone around here has my back, with the exception of Rush Limbaugh, who is trying to make this into a race issue...that's disgusting."
Limbaugh made the remark to suggest why President obama might have appeared preoccupied at church on the day of the operation to rescue the ship's captain, who was taken hostage by the pirates until Navy SEAL snipers shot them in a daring rescue effort.
"He was worried about the order he had given to wipe out three teenagers on the high seas," Limbaugh said. "Black Muslim teenagers."
"You gotta get with us or against us here, Rush," Murphy said. "The president did the right thing...It's a war.... It's about good versus evil. And what you said is evil. It's hate speech. I won't tolerate it."

...In its report on the first quarter of 2009, Goldman CLAIMED A PROFIT of $1.8 billion. How did the banking giant do it? By MAGICALLY MAKING DECEMBER DISAPPEAR. In September, as the financial crisis worsened and pressure from the Fed mounted, Goldman SWITCHED from being an investment bank to a traditional bank holding company. As part of that, it had to change its fiscal year -- it used to end in November, now it ends at the close of the calendar year. THAT MEANT GOLDMAN's LATEST REPORT DIDN'T INCLUDE DECEMBER -- A MONTH IN WHICH THE BANK __LOST__ MORE THAN #1 BILLION. As reported by Floyd Norris, this billion-dollar tidbit WAS NOT MENTIONED in the text of the company's press release about its "profitable" first quarter -- it was BURIED deep inside the tables that accompanied the release.
The PRESS COVERAGE of the stunning turnaround was NOT much more edifying. For example, it was NOT noted until the _12th PARAGRAPH__ of the first New York Times story on Goldman's "profits" (on the jump page) that the bank had "also reported a loss of $1 billion in the month of December." A pretty relevant piece of information -- if you made it that far. The headline on the story read "Goldman Posts Profit and Plans Share Sale." No questioning, no shading. Just the facts -- as Goldman wanted them presented.
And the bank had good reason for promoting such a sunny (albeit completely manufactured) take. When you're readying to do a share sale, it helps to have the share price up, which is easier to pull off when you're able to hide $1 billion in losses.

Yglesias catches CHRIS MATHEWS' 'JOURNALISTIC' INCOMPETENCE... Mathews GIVES Tom DeLay a FREE PASS for his lies about Texas' economic status....
Hat-tip to Yglesias for catching & posting(and DeLong for pointing out) former Republican Dictator-of-the-House Tom DeLay (former Republican Majority Whip of the US Congress, but actually the iron-fisted Republican "Hammer" ruler of that Congress) making his radical Right-Wing case that because "TEXAS WORKS HARDER" than other states (especially urban, northern, liberal-dominated "Blue states") it is "RICHER" than them.
OF COURSE _CHRIS MATHEWS_ gave a FREE PASS to all of DeLay's nonsensical economic claims... it was ALL the hapless Mathews could do to try to poke holes in DeLay's (and fellow Texas Republican, and current Texas GOVERNOR, RICK PERRY's) notions that TEXAS has STILL got a right to SECEDE from the United States!

This segment of the interview in which he lays out his substantive rationale has gotten less attention. But DeLay’s conceit is that Texas is a “wealthy state” because of it’s right-wing business-friendly policies, a situation that he specifically contrasts with the environment in California, New York, and New Jersey which have allegedly impoverished themselves with high taxes and overregulation....
One problem here is that Texas isn’t a wealthy state. Its median household income of $47,548 made it 28th in the country. Below average, in other words. New Jersey is second, California is eighth, and New York is nineteenth. Indeed, of the top ten states in per capita income nine are “blue” states."
